Carl Hansen & Søn Danish craftsmanship since 1908

Carl Hansen & Søn Danish craftsmanship since 1908

In 1908, Danish furniture maker Carl Hansen opens a small workshop on the Danish island of Funen. In the early days, the company produced custom furniture. The furniture factory quickly became known for its excellent craftsmanship and beautiful design. To this day, Carl Hansen & Søn combines traditional woodworking techniques and sustainable production with the latest modern technology. Thanks to the collaboration with leading Danish architects, the collection contains world-famous classics

classic: the Wishbone Chair
The legendary Wishbone Chair by designer Hans J. Wegner is an icon in Danish design. John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon staged presidential debates with this chair. The chair is inspired by the Chinese Ming dynasty. The backrest has the shape of a Y-shaped "wishbone". Despite its simple appearance, a total of 100 steps are required to produce the Wishbone Chair, the majority of which is pure handcraft. The wide, spacious seat is specially designed for optimal comfort and consists of no less than 120 meters of rope that is woven entirely by hand.

fair and sustainable
After World War II, the scarcity of materials and fabrics meant that the demand for simple wooden furniture was greater than ever before. Around that time, architect Hans J. Wegner was one of the new and emerging designers in Denmark. The design used to be very revolutionary and loved for its seating comfort. Many other successful designs followed. Every piece of furniture from the Carl Hansen & Søn collection has the power of a good story. Sustainability is of paramount importance. The furniture is made of FSC certified beech, ash or oak wood from Danish forests and ecological saw mills.

Hans J. Wegner
Among the Danish furniture designers, Hans J. Wegner is considered one of the most creative, innovative and productive. Often referred to as the master of the chair, Wegner created nearly 500 chairs during his lifetime, many of which are considered masterpieces. He is probably best known for his iconic Wishbone Chair, which has been continuously produced since 1950.
